Chennai. Indian cricket team’s experienced off-spinner R Ashwin has expressed his strong displeasure over young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal not being included in the ODI team for the New Zealand tour. Ashwin believes that the morale and confidence of this young player is being badly affected due to continuous being ignored despite his excellent performance. Recently the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had announced the team for the upcoming New Zealand tour.
Questions raised on selection process
Questioning the working style of the selectors, Ashwin said that if Shubman Gill is not playing in the opening or opening matches, then Yashasvi Jaiswal should have been given priority in his place in the playing eleven. He said that he understands well the situation of senior and established players like Shubman Gill and KL Rahul who have cemented their place in the team, but keeping Yashasvi continuously on the bench and not giving him a chance to play is not good for the future of an emerging player.
Impact on batting style and confidence
Referring to the change in Yashasvi’s recent game, Ashwin said that sitting out continuously affects the player’s natural style and mental state. He said, I feel that this is breaking his confidence. If you look at his batting technique and attitude, he is no longer able to bat as aggressively as he used to do two-three years ago. Sitting in the dugout continuously affects the natural game of young players.
cited excellent performance
Speaking in support of Yashasvi, Ashwin specifically mentioned his recent statistics and innings. He reminded that in the last match of the ODI series played against Afghanistan in the month of June this year, Yashasvi performed brilliantly and scored an unbeaten century of 110 runs in just 86 balls. Due to injury of Virat Kohli, he got a chance on that tour and he took full advantage of that opportunity by proving his usefulness.
Ashwin finally advised the team management and selectors to understand the talent of this promising young player and give him enough opportunities, so that he can improve himself further at the international level.
