New Delhi. The security agencies remained fully prepared for the protest called by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar on Friday in the national capital Delhi. Delhi Police had refused permission for this demonstration, due to which an intensive checking campaign was conducted on all the borders and major routes of the capital. Even before the demonstration, many protesters were taken into preventive custody from Jantar Mantar and Connaught Place.
Action against big political leaders and workers
Tightening the security arrangements, the police detained CJP founder Abhijit Dipke at the Delhi airport itself. Apart from this, All India Students Association (AISA) national president Neha Bora and other activists were also detained. During this time, senior advocate Prashant Bhushan and leader Yogendra Yadav were also seen, whose custody bus was stopped at Safdarjung Airport flyover. On the other hand, Aam Aadmi Party leader Gopal Rai along with his supporters protested against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and demanded his resignation. To control the situation, the police also detained Gopal Rai and his supporters.
Strict security arrangements and section 163 implemented
Extensive steps were taken to maintain law and order in the capital. In view of security, 45 metro stations of Delhi were closed and internet services were also temporarily disrupted in some selected areas. DCP Special Cell Chaitanya, while clarifying the situation, said that the situation in India Gate and surrounding areas is completely peaceful and crowd has not been allowed to gather anywhere. He said that Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS) is in force in the area and full cooperation is being received from the public.
Sharp reactions to protests
Commenting on the administrative crackdown, economist Jean Dreze said the heavy security forces and tight restrictions are proof that the government is concerned about citizens’ democratic rights and voting rights. Due to the vigilance of police and security forces, no untoward incident has been reported in the capital.
