Manila. Amidst rising global tensions and concerns of supply disruption in West Asia, Asian countries have taken a big step towards building emergency oil reserves by uniting together. In the ministerial meeting of ‘Asia Zero Emission Community’ (AZEC) held in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, member countries led by Japan have agreed on a joint action plan to strengthen oil security.

Emergency Oil Reserves and Strategic Cooperation

The main objective of this agreement is to jointly utilize the oil storage infrastructure in times of crisis and jointly release fuel from strategic reserves to prevent market volatility. Under this new strategy, Asian countries will continuously advance their regional cooperation in the renewable and clean energy sector along with strengthening the emergency oil system. The main objective of this initiative of Japan is to protect the economies of member countries from supply shocks in emergency situations.

Strait of Hormuz and global energy security

At present, the eyes of the whole world are focused on the Strait of Hormuz, which is considered extremely sensitive for global oil trade. Uninterrupted supply of crude oil through this sea route is extremely important for major Asian countries like India, Japan, China and South Korea. Any military tensions in the region or disruption to shipping movements could lead to a sharp spike in global transportation costs and oil prices. Building emergency oil reserves by Asian countries together is a prudent and defensive step to deal with potential threats and keep their economies stable.
