Zelensky hit back after Trump insisted on new leadership in Ukraine and demands for presidential elections. Responding to Trump’s statements in an interview, Zelensky said, “Ask Putin to give us 60 days. After 60 days of complete ceasefire, we are ready to hold elections.” He made it clear that as long as there is a war going on in the country and martial law is in force, it is not possible from legal and security point of view to conduct free and fair elections.

According to analysts, America’s upcoming midterm elections and domestic political pressure are the important reasons behind this diplomacy. Diesel prices directly affect voters because of America’s reliance on freight trucks. In order to control the rising prices of diesel, the Trump administration has made an unexpected agreement to import diesel from Russia. Due to excessive dependence on America, Zelensky is trying to balance this diplomatic pressure on his own terms.
