Veteran Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani met American businessman Michael Bloomberg during the prestigious ‘Bloomberg New Economy Forum’ held in New Delhi. After this important meeting, Gautam Adani shared a very practical and clear vision on the direction of India’s energy transition. Through one of his posts on social media, he emphasized that the entire process of reducing carbon emissions in the country should be based on affordable, reliable and balanced power supply. He clearly warned that this transition towards clean energy should not be such that electricity prices for ordinary households increase or the country’s steady industrial progress slows down.

Special emphasis on green energy and reducing ‘green premium’

While discussing ways to adopt green energy globally, Gautam Adani made several important points:

  • Pragmatism beyond ideological order: Policy to reduce carbon emissions should not become merely an ‘ideological mandate’ that is inaccessible to ordinary citizens, leads to factory closures or stunts the economic development of the Global South (developing countries).

  • Reducing the Green Premium: The first and primary need of this direction is to rapidly reduce the additional cost of adopting green energy i.e. ‘Green Premium’.

  • Synergy of three powers: Real and sustainable progress is possible only when capital, policy and their implementation on the ground work together. Their common goal should be to reduce the green premium until clean energy becomes the undisputed cheapest and best option.

  • Risk of dependency on legacy systems: He also warned of the dangers of completely abandoning old and traditional energy systems amid climate-related uncertainties.

Four essential pillars and infrastructure of nation building

Industrialist Adani stressed that India needs to massively expand power supply, industrial capacity and digital access to boost its economic growth and raise living standards:

  • Thinking beyond physical assets: Infrastructure is not limited to physical infrastructure such as ports, transmission corridors, green hydrogen plants and computing facilities; For this, reliable data, accountable institutions and effective governance are equally important.

  • Four pillars of nation building: Four forces are essential for true and inclusive nation building—patient capital, physical implementation, transparent governance and capable local leadership.

  • Real scale of infrastructure: The ultimate assessment of infrastructure should not be just by the assets created, but by what the common people have been able to achieve through it.

People-centric model of Dharavi redevelopment and urban renewal

In this high-level meeting with Michael Bloomberg, apart from energy, there was also an in-depth discussion on Artificial Intelligence (AI), advanced manufacturing, green infrastructure and modern urban development.

  • Vision of Dharavi Project: Making a special mention of Mumbai’s much talked about Dharavi redevelopment project, Gautam Adani said that the success of this project should not be measured only by the scope of real estate developed, but by the positive improvement it brings to the living standards of the residents and their livelihoods.

  • Example of urban renewal: He said that if infrastructure development is combined with the unwavering trust of the local community and the security of their economic activities, this ambitious project can become a unique example for urban renewal across the world.

This entire high-level discussion clearly indicates that India’s future development path rests on a very practical balance between environmental protection and economic viability.
